COUNTRIES WITH COMPLETED FINAL DRAFT NBFs
The Democratic Republic of Congo has finalized its NBF in December 2007, bringing the number of countries that have finished the Development project to 98!

As 6th Decembery 2007, 98
countries have completed the majority of their Development
of National Biosafety Projects and have draft NBFs on the UNEP Biosafety
website and many others are well advanced. These projects have generated
a wealth of in-country experience in building capacity for biosafety.
UNEP Biosafety has begun to compile some of this experience internally
with a preliminary case study "Building Biosafety Capacity
in Developing Countries: Experiences of the UNEP-GEF Project on Development
of National Biosafety Frameworks" which is now available
for download as a pdf file here.

BCH PROJECT
12/07/2006: New Regional Advisors
During a 2 weeks workshop held in Bangkok, Thailand (see
report), the BCH project successfully trained additional Regional
Advisors, experts in IT and Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety . Thirty
four [34] specialists from all regions are now ready to go on the
field and advise/train UNEP-GEF BCH project
participating countries.
23/05/2005:GEF approved the project "Building Capacity for Effective Participation in the BCH (add-on to include 89 additional countries)". The UNEP-GEF BCH project is therefore expanded from 50 to 139 countries.
12/04/2005: BCH training modules developed in collaboration with UNITAR and SCBD are now published on the BCH training modules page.
21/03/2005: The selection process for BCH Regional Advisers, formerly known as Regional Experts, has now ended. Please click here to read short biographies of the advisors. All selected candidates have now been contacted.
25/01/2005: The third BCH Project quarterly report

NEW STAFF
Ms Mallory Smuts has left the team to pursue other interests and we wish her every success.
Ms Belinda Clarke, an intern from New Zealand, left us in mid-June after three months. We wish her good luck in her new work in corporate law back in Wellington.
In March 2005, Professor Leonard O’Garro joined the team as the Regional Coordinator for the Caribbean. Leonard is a Geneticist and has been Professor of Plant Pathology at the University of the West Indies (UWI). He has also served on the Compliance Committee of the CPB. Leonard will be based in Barbados.
In April 2005 Dr David Duthie has joined us in April 2005 from the UNEP DGEF Nairobi office as Information Officer. David has worked with UNEP Nairobi for the last 5 years as part of the UNEP-GEF Biodiversity team, managing their portfolio of projects supporting the Convention on Biological Diversity.
In May 2005, Mr Ide Ahmed joined as Fund Management Officer (FMO) in the financial administration offices in Nairobi. Ide has over 5 years experience in audit and accounting of grassroots humanitarian projects via the UN Office of Internal Oversight Services (OIOS).
