Mongolian Nature and Environment Consortium (MNEC), Mongolia

MNEC is a non-profit, non-governmental organization (NGO) assisting decision makers, scientists, public/community and the private sector in conducting studies, scientific research and practical activities on sustainable development and environmental management. It is an alliance of 14 Mongolian nature and environment conservation research institutes, universities and NGOs, committed to cooperation in all subject-related fields.

MNEC’s vision is to assist Mongolia in conserving and ensuring the sustainable use of natural resources for improving the well-being of Mongolian citizens. This vision will be reached by community based natural resource management through sharing the knowledge and experience on environment conservation and its sustainable use. Through its research and information service, MNEC aims at contributing to a better understanding of environmental and natural resources concerns and their sustainable use and seeks at improving the technical and scientific basis for decision-making on environmental issues.

MNEC’s work on assessments specifically focuses on biodiversity and environmental conservation, including assessments of the Mongolian biodiversity conservation capacity, capacity building needs and country specific priorities in biodiversity conservation, the institutional structure of biodiversity conservation, the role of NGOs for biodiversity conservation in protected areas and the technical capacity for environmental conservation. With respect to trade-related topics, MNEC gained some experience in the preliminary stages of the preparation of Mongolia’s Second National Report on the Implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity, for which MNEC had to undertake some research in the overlapping field of trade and biodiversity.

MNEC is working closely with national institutions as well as the Ministry of Nature and Environment, the Ministry of Infrastructure, international organizations including the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, UNDP and other funding organizations.
