Workshop on the Impacts of Trade-Related Policies on Fisheries and Measures Required for their Sustainable Management

15 March 2002, Geneva, Switzerland

The Economics and Trade Branch of the United Nations Environment Programme convened this workshop on 15 March 2002.

Organized in consultation with the WTO secretariat, FAO, and the OECD, the workshop aimed to provide a forum for informal discussions and consultations between trade and environment officials and international institutions involved in this subject.

Objectives of the workshop:

  1. To create better understanding of the economic, environmental and related social effects of trade-related policies, including fisheries subsidies;

  2. To explore approaches and policy reform packages that contribute to the sustainable management of fisheries; and

  3. To consider action needed to promote the sustainable management of fisheries and the role of governments and international organizations in this regard.

Two studies assessing the impacts of trade-related policies on fisheries in Bangladesh and Mauritania have been commissioned by UNEP in preparation for this workshop. A brief paper on ways to move forward on policy reform of fisheries subsidies with the aim of securing sustainable management of fisheries and sustainable trade flows is currently being prepared by UNEP.
