Second Meeting of the Network of Institutions for Sustainable Development (NISD)
19 September 2005 Geneva, Switzerland

UNEP's Economics and Trade Branch hosted the Second Meeting of the Network of Institutions for Sustainable Development (NISD) in Geneva on 19 September 2005.
The meeting brought together institutions that play a leading role in capacity building at national and regional level from around the world including national training and research institutes, universities, and international and non-governmental organizations.
During the meeting, current and potential members of the recently established Network discussed the progress, modalities and future activities. Working group discussions on selected topics provided an opportunity to share knowledge and experience, discuss new trends and identify activities that can be implemented in upcoming years.
The overarching purpose of the Network is to promote the integration of environmental and sustainability issues into economic and trade policies through the development and implementation of capacity building activities. The Network was launched on 26 March 2004 at the meeting held in Jeju Island, Republic of Korea. Since the first meeting, a number of activities have been initiated by NISD members such as national and regional training workshops, country projects, research programmes or the development and translation of reference and training material.
The Second Network Meeting was held back-to-back with an International Workshop that discussed the findings of a recently completed UNEP initiative on Integrated Assessment of Trade-related Policies in the Rice Sector (20 September).
