Capacity Building Workshop on Integrated Assessment
of Trade-related Policies and Biodiversity in the
Agricultural Sector

Geneva, 25 - 27 October 2006

UNEP's Economic and Trade Branch organized a capacity building workshop under the auspices of its initiative on Integrated Assessment of Trade-related Policies and Biological Diversity in the Agricultural Sector on 25-27 October 2006 in Geneva.

This UNEP initiative aims to enhance capacity in African, Pacific and Caribbean (ACP) countries to develop policy recommendations that safeguard biological diversity while maximizing sustainable development gains from trade liberalization in the agriculture sector. Six ACP countries have been selected to receive technical and financial support over the next two years to undertake country projects that assess the economic, social and environmental impacts of trade liberalization in the agricultural sector with particular focus on biodiversity.

The main objective of the capacity building workshop was to prepare the country project teams for the implementation of the integrated assessment project at national level, including the launching workshop, capacity building activities, participatory processes and applied research. The workshop covered various aspects of integrated assessment, the inter-linkages between trade, agriculture and biodiversity and the main challenges of project implementation and stakeholder participation.
