The WTO Fisheries Subsidies Negotiations: Update and Introductory Briefing for New Delegates

Geneva, 1 April 2009

UNEP and WWF hosted an informal briefing on

“The History and Status of the WTO Fishery Subsidies Negotiations”

The meeting took place at the World Trade Organization (Room D), Centre William Rappard, Rue de Lausanne 154, 1211 Geneva 21, Switzerland on 1 April 2009.

The briefing, assembling around 70 participants, provided an opportunity to discuss current issues in the fisheries subsidies talks in an informal and “off the record” setting supported by UNEP and WWF experts. It also offered introductory overview of the fisheries subsidies talks for the benefit of delegates who have recently joined the WTO diplomatic corps.

After a brief overview of the background and history of the negotiations, the discussions specifically focused on the scope of the prohibition and options for creating Special and Differential Treatment (S&DT) that would create possibilities for sustainable development of the fisheries sector.
