First National Workshop on Regional Economic Integration Strategies for Environmental Sustainability and Poverty Reduction (RISPOII)

1-3 March 2006, Beijing, China

The Policy Research Centre for Environment and Economy (PRCEE) and the Institute of Global Environmental Strategies from Japan organized the 1 st National Workshop in China on 2 March 2006 in the framework of the NISD Partnership Project on Regional Economic Integration in Asia. In addition, two technical meetings were held on 1 and 3 March involving the core team of researchers. The workshop was supported by the State Environment Protection Administration of China (SEPA), the Ministry of Environment of Japan (MOEJ) and UNEP.

The main objectives of the workshop were to present the research framework of the project on the Promotion of Sustainable Development in the context of Regional Economic Integration and to review the progress of China's work in this project. About 25 people, mostly from the Chinese institutions, attended the workshop. Representatives from Japan and International Organisation, including UNEP's Office in China, were also present. The workshop provided an opportunity for participants from different stakeholder groups to provide comments and suggestions for China's country study and identify the issues to be addressed in China in the context of East Asian's regional economic integration, especially in the field of environment and trade.

PRCEE presented the country's situation regarding Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) and Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs) and shared the preliminary results of the Policy Review and Trend Analysis undertaken in China, including the main economic, social and environmental trends. The technical meetings provided an opportunity for the team of researchers to discuss detailed technical problems in an interactive way and further refine the modelling and policy analysis.
