PAST EVENTS: Joint UNEP/IEA Initiative on Energy Subsidy Reform and Sustainable Development  Dates: 16-17 January, 2001 Location: BANGKOK, Thailand Online Documents: Information Note PDF format [ 14 KB ] Description: Recognizing the strong need for reform of energy subsidies and sustainable development, UNEP's Division of Technology, Industry and Economics has jointly organized with the International Energy Agency a series of regional workshops in Africa, Asia and Latin America. The workshops were designed to enhance in-country capacities to identify sustainable energy strategies and outline policy options that can support them. The initiative also sought to promote dialogue between countries facing similar opportunities and challenges in the area of energy production and consumption and advance the dialogue between developed and developing countries on energy subsidies and their implications. The final workshop took place on 28 March in Santiago de Chile and emphasised issues relevant to the respective region and regional needs.
