GCRMN
Global Coral Reef Monitoring
Network
The GCRMN was established by UNEP, IOC, WMO and IUCN to
assess how, where and why coral reefs are being so damaged
and determine how to prevent further decline. It works by
building networks of people trained to observe coral reefs
and monitor their condition, and by using what is known
about coral reefs in order to advance reef management.
When the International Coral Reef
Initiative (ICRI) was launched at the United Nations
Global Conference on Sustainable Development of Small Islands
Developing States in Barbados in 1994, there was renewed
emphasis on monitoring coral reefs. In 1995 ICRI called
on many nations to commit themselves to increased research
and monitoring of reefs with a view to improving their management.
In 1999 work began on the establishment of the International
Coral Reef Information Network (ICRIN) to advance the public
awareness goals set forth in the ICRI Framework for Action.
The GCRMN is maintained by the Australian Institute of
Marine Science in cooperation with the U.S. National Oceanic
and Atmospheric Administration's Coral Health and Monitoring
Program, and in association with WorldFish Center (ICLARM)
in Penang.
