ICRI
International Coral Reef
Initiative
ICRI operates as a global umbrella for coral reefs. When
it was launched at the United Nations Global Conference
on Sustainable Development of Small Islands Developing States
in Barbados in 1994, there was renewed emphasis on monitoring
coral reefs. In 1995 ICRI called on many nations to commit
themselves to increased research and monitoring of reefs
with a view to improving their management.
ICRI is a joint initiative of several countries (the United
States, Japan, Australia, Jamaica, France, the United Kingdom,
the Philippines, and Sweden) in partnership with other coral
reef nations around the world, non-governmental organizations
(NGOs), international organizations, multilateral development
banks, and private sector businesses.
UNEP has given high priority to the implementation of ICRI,
supporting regional workshops for the Caribbean, East Asia,
Red Sea/Middle East, South Asia, South Pacific and Western
Indian Ocean/Eastern African regions. These workshops developed
regional policy framework and programme of action of the
protection and management of coral reefs and associated
ecosystems such as seagrass beds and mangrove forests.
There are now three operational units of ICRI: the Global
Coral Reef Monitoring Network (GCRMN), the International
Coral Reef Information Network (ICRIN) and the International
Coral Reef Action Network (ICRAN).
