A brief history of the Mediterranean Action Plan

The Barcelona Convention was adopted in 1975, entered into force in 1978, and was amended in 1995 (amendments not yet in force).

Associated Protocols concern:
• Prevention and Elimination of Pollution by Dumping from Ships and Aircraft or Incineration at Sea, adopted 1976, entered into force 1978 and amended 1995 (amendments not yet in force).
• Protection of the Mediterranean Sea against Pollution from Land-based Sources and Activities, adopted 1980, entered into force 1983 and amended 1996 (amendments not yet in force).
• Specially Protected Areas and Biological Diversity in the Mediterranean, adopted 1982, entered into force 1986, amended 1995 and entered into force 1999.
• Cooperation in Preventing Pollution from Ships and in Cases of Emergency, Combating Pollution in the Mediterranean Sea, adopted 1976, entered into force and amended 2002 (amendments not yet in force).
• Protection of the Mediterranean Sea against Pollution Resulting from Exploration and Exploitation of the Continental Shelf and the Seabed and its Subsoil, adopted 1994 (not yet entered into force).
• Prevention of Pollution of the Mediterranean Sea by Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal, adopted in 1996 (not yet entered into force).

Action Plan for the Protection of the Marine Environment and the Sustainable Development of the Coastal Areas of the Mediterranean, adopted 1975, revised 1995.

Strategic Action Programme to address Pollution from Land-based Activities, adopted in 1997.

Strategic Action Programme for the Conservation of Biological Diversity adopted in 2003.
