Europe on the road to sustainable consumption and production

UNEP preparatory meeting - 30 November 2009

On 30 November 2009 at Geneva, Palais des Nations, national delegates from across Europe and North America will meet to review their achievements and best practices on sustainable consumption and production. Organised by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the meeting intends to screen current national and regional policies; country experts will also identify the main barriers in implementing sustainable programmes in these two core fields: production and consumption.

The main conclusions of the meeting will feed the broader discussion on sustainable development first among European and North American countries and then at a global level. The Fourth Regional Implementation Meeting on Sustainable Development, organized by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe on 1 and 2 December, will indeed integrate the recommendations into its sustainable development goals. The ultimate objective of the United Nations is to develop a 10 Year Framework of Programmes specifically on how to change our consumption and production modes.

The meeting will be opened by Christophe Bouvier, UNEP/ROE Director and Regional Representative for Europe.

Mr. Nikola Ruzinski, State Secretary of the Croatian Ministry of Environment Protection, Physical Planning and Construction, will chair the meeting in the morning. Ms Elisabet Falemo, the State Secretary of the Swedish Ministry of the Environment, will do so in the afternoon.
